BlissFridays
Tilt - Rochester, NY - Bill Judkins 11.22.02
|
This exciting new club night has all the components in place to become one of Rochester's most legendary club nights. The right place, the right sound system, the right dj's, the right vibe and the right prices. Tilt's creative force is Mark Cross who has been involved in some of the most influential clubs in Rochester primarily the highly creative and visually sophisticated nightclub Heaven. Mark has a keen understanding of how the space and the vibe create a balance in a successful club. He doesn't just jump in head first and have a wait and see attitude about his clubs. He's very clear about how the space will look, how the vibe will feel and he hasn't been wrong yet. He knows when something isn't working. Tilt is a clear example of Mark's determination having done all of the interior design himself using skills he acquired while in RIT's Interior Design program. Although Rochester has been slowly adding more and more visually sophisticated bars and clubs over the past 3-4 years, Tilt has the exceptional and original touch that only a leader like Mark can bring to the table. "If I don't like it in a few years I can always change it," Mark explains, "but I'm very happy with how this place turned out - this is really working right now." The resident dj's that have teamed up to bring BlissFridays to Tilt are no strangers to the Rochester scene either. Rob Morley has been broadcasting his live dj sets from WRUR 88.5 fm on Monday nights at 8pm for several years now. He has a strong listener base and explores a broad spectrum of electronica that has kept his audience energized and interested. Joining Rob on the radio is Al DeSalvo who has been spinning records regionally for several years as well. His first residency was at the short-lived nightclub Red alongside the well known and influential dj DV8/John Slater. "We're really excited about this night, we feel really good about it," Al says, "we've all worked really hard to promote this." The other hardworking, resident dj's are James Revival, Jon Herbert and Synja. This team of five is unstoppable now that they have landed at Tilt. Their opening night was a smashing success with a ground swell that lasted well past the nerve-wracking 11 o'clock 2 for 1 drink cut off. Club owners and promoters often fear the crowd will simply leave after the specials end, but people were clearly out for the music and the scene. And a very reasonable 4-dollar cover certainly helps. The emerging Toronto talent, dj and producer Paranoid Jack (Stickman Records) took the helm for a dj set at around midnight that absolutely brought the house down. The format is house with a latin, west coast vibe - an infectious sound that has been sweeping the larger, urban clubs the past few years. This club night has had a very strong start out of the gate and will continue to book new and emerging talent for each of their upcoming Friday nights. This original scene and new blend of sophisticated, house music and energy is an absolute must see in Rochester nightlife.
